Margaret River is truly a gem for a family-friendly getaway in WA’s South West Region. From the serenity of the unrivaled coastline to the array of adventures, it is a match for both adults and children to enjoy a getaway that ticks the boxes for everyone, not just the kids!
Here is our list of the top 8 family-friendly activities in Margaret River:
Breakfast at White Elephant Cafe
A local family-friendly favorite of ours is located on the beachfront of Gnarabup Beach, with easy beach access in front, so the kids can play in the sand, and you can have your coffee and breakfast [while it’s hot]. They also happen to serve pretty epic coffee (and mind you, we are firm coffee snobs) and their Pumpkin Smash is a delicacy. The beach is protected from the wind, so offers a great spot to perch up with an umbrella for a morning dip and cruise.
A picnic and play at Gnarabup Reserve and playground
Pack a picnic rug and snacks for the morning, and head down to Gnarabup Reserve for a few hours of play at the stunning playground boasting ocean views. Located at the end of Resort Place, there is also a spacious oval for dogs to run around or to play a friendly game of footy.
A coffee and play at the Skate Park
Margaret River Skate Park is a buzzy place to be in the morning! Filled with the smell of freshly made barista coffee, and the sound of laughing kids and friends coming together to have a chat before the day unfolds. West Coffee brews up coffee every day except Sunday, from 6 am, so perfect for those early-rising little ones.
A seated afternoon wine tasting & cheese board at Walsh and Sons
Visit Walsh and Son’s cellar door for a relaxed wine-tasting experience overlooking lush gardens and a large area of grass for the kids to run and play. To add to the relaxed experience, you can enjoy a wine tasting in the comfort of your seat and order a divine cheeseboard to sweeten the deal and let the afternoon sink in.
A mountain bike through the rugged terrain
Margaret River is known for its stunning rugged terrain explored best on the right gear - a mountain bike. For those up for the adventure, this can be a great family-friendly day adventure. Margaret River Mountain Bike Tours offers a range of unique tours from a family half day in the forest to a “ride to wine” tour so you can immerse in adventure and the world-renowned wines of the region at the same time.
A sunset drink at Surfers Point
Surfers Point is an iconic symbol for the wild waves of the South West shores. It welcomes some of the best surfers from around the world as part of the professional world surfing circuit. It is equally well-known for being the spot to be for sunset in Summer, as lush lawn laces the hill for an epic spot to watch the sun go down and any surfing action. Let the kids run free with a packed dinner to fill up their bellies. A bottle of wine and nibbles usually do the trick for us in the afternoon! Felix Caspar is our go-to and can conveniently be purchased from the local general store in Prevelly.
Dinner at The Common
The Common Bar and Bistro is a charming, coastal space with delicious food and drink options and a lovely nature-based playground for the kids to burn off energy before bedtime! Their tacos and Spicy Margis are on rotation on our visits.
As a young family, we understand how traveling with kids can be a storm of chaos, but we like to think it can co-exist with beautiful moments. We hope our list of family-friendly activities gives you the inspiration you need to take that family trip and enjoy it - the memories are worth it!
